Some seeds can lie dormant buried in the ground fo Some seeds can lie dormant buried in the ground for years, even centuries, waiting for the right conditions to take root. When they do, the first root to emerge is called the radicle.

It anchors and stretches the seed to make growth possible.

The Persons Case was one of those "radicle" moments. In 1929, five Canadian women challenged the conventional wisdom of their time that women could not be considered “persons”, and therefore not eligible for appointment to the Senate. Their lawyer challenged generations of legal precedent to argue that Canada’s Constitution must be capable of evolving with society giving us what is known as the "living tree doctrine".

Together with Garden of Even, Seabrook Workplace Law is proud to present:

Radicle Personhood™ 2026: Unconventional Wisdom
Persons' Day, Monday, October 26

By examining the stories and beliefs at the root of our assumptions and practices, we can better understand how institutions can be re-rooted for a better future.

This year’s conversation features the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, former Chief Justice of Canada, whose own extraordinary career challenged assumptions about who could occupy the highest positions of authority in Canadian law.

Yesterday I went to the @mentoringleaguesociety Festival in São Paulo at the amazing Palmeiras stadium! It was a day of incredible energy. MLS is the top entrepreneur mentoring program in Brasil led by three of the best Brazilian entrepreneurs - @joeljota, @caiocarneiro and @flavioaugustogv!

A special thank you to @instituto.rosadosventos and @clinicasalutares.com.br for inviting me to experience the event from the Premium Pista.

As Joel Jota, Caio Carneiro, and Flávio Augusto da Silva ran through a roll call for audience members from every region of Brazil. I kept my hand ready, they skipped asking if anyone made the trip down from Canada.🇨🇦 Next time!

The insights shared from the stage were practical and sharp:
 * Joel Jota focused on maintaining a teachable heart, keeping an open agenda, and staying obedient to your goals.
 * Caio Carneiro celebrated his 40th birthday on stage and shared that life starts when you are ready to begin, not at a certain age. Stop waiting and just start.
 * Flavio Augusto highlighted the importance of keeping sales as the primary engine of your business and building your own category in the market.

On this International Women’s Day, remember… We ar On this International Women’s Day, remember… We are just getting started.

In the 1900s women were not even legally “persons” under the laws of Canada. That only changed in 1929.

Women couldn’t open their own bank accounts until 1964. And we could only access credit and loans on our own in 1977, with the passing of the Canadian Human Rights Act. However, in practice, it remained extremely difficult for a woman to get a loan, and forget about a business loan.

In 1986, the Employment Equity Act required businesses to track and improve the roles of women in the workplace, helping women gain access to higher status roles.

It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that we started to see specific programs for women entrepreneurs. In 1995, the federal government established regional hubs specifically to provide loans and business advice to women, recognizing that traditional banks were still not meeting the needs of female founders.

In 2018, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) was a massive shift in scale, when the government launched a $2 billion national strategy to help women entrepreneurs.

So in only 49 years from first being able to access capital (and not really even then), the numbers show that women entrepreneurs have a huge impact. Women now own approximately 20% of all businesses in Canada. These companies contribute over $90 billion in annual revenue and employ nearly one million people.

But the gaps still remain significant.

→ Venture capital distribution remains remarkably low for women-led startups, hovering around 2% globally..

→ Financing is still a hurdle. Women often pay higher interest rates on lines of credit than their male counterparts.

→ Women are nearly 50% more likely than men to close a business due to family or caregiving responsibilities.

We know that if we closed these gaps, the potential impact on our national GDP is estimated at $150 billion! We have done so much in less than 50 years, and we have so much more to give to our Canadian economy if we can remove structural barriers to women entrepreneurship.

To the women building businesses, you are amazing, inspiring, and strong.
Workplace bullying or harassment complaints can fe Workplace bullying or harassment complaints can feel overwhelming, but how you respond from the very first moment matters just as much as the outcome.

A fair, thoughtful, and thorough approach is not just about checking boxes. It ensures concerns are heard, protects both employees and the company, and strengthens the culture of respect in your workplace.
